by dr. natalie leave a comment i was discussing a serious case with an owner in a room. this owner was a plumber and owned a plumbing company. i was explaining at length to the owner because the estimate was large due to the potential need to go to surgery. it involved an intestinal obstruction in his labrador. we reviewed the uncertainty in the x rays, the possibility of doing a contrast study to confirm the dog needed surgery (+$$$) or just to bypass further diagnostics and go to surgery to “explore” the intestinal tract for problems/ fix them in surgery. he looked up at me and with enormous rottweiler. as veterinarians, we often have an eclectic blend of animals at our personal homes. my friend, dr. carli, is no exception, she does prefer her canines to be large, very large. the particular dog in this story, a male rottweiler who weighed 160 lbs, mack. at this time, dr.carli was pregnant with just a few weeks to go and living in the country on 10 acres. she enjoys farms and horses as part of her home life. she had a nice home and a barn. the house was not visible from the main road, only the entrance of the driveway. this driveway was an extra long sort. as you turned on to her drive, you poured through some trees until finally in opened up to a garden and a front yard with a house. dr. carli was out in her yard one day enjoying some time off managing her garden with mack at her side. she had her trimmers in her hand, when she noticed a vehicle sound creeping down her drive. a large black suburban pulled slowly down the drive. the windows were mildly tinted but it appeared to be full of people. they spotted dr.carli in her garden. mack looked up from sniffing some flowers. he was about 100 yards away. dr. carli, being pregnant and not used to visitors was somewhat unsettled and quietly stared. the people in the front of the vehicle smiled and waved. all at once all four doors opened and out poured about 6 people in suits with apparently friendly intentions, possibly jehovah witnesses, but we’ll never know. mack, not used to any strangers coming down the drive ever, decided a full, fierce bolt at the people was necessary and so, he charged. in addition, he vocalized his objections to their presence in his most ferocious rottweiler way. the chinese fire drill began. six people who had only stepped a few feet from the vehicle, with sheer panic, with olympic level haste, scrambled in multiple directions back into the car. dr. carli, who had not moved, just stood frozen. mack barked and lept and carried on around the vehicle. all 6 people appeared to make it in the car before mack reached them. that’s when dr carli noticed the person in the front passenger seat lowered their window. the man created a 3/4 inch window crack so he could speak to dr carli, although it was more of a mutter. dr carlie thought she heard,” have a nice day.” the giant vehicle proceeded to slowly back up down the long drive, the way it came. mack settled down, quite pleased with himself. he sat in the driveway with a stern look as the people departed. dr. carli raised her hand slowly waving goodbye. filed under: uncategorized the seizing dog august 20, 2016 by dr. natalie leave a comment new patient today, came in emergency for seizing, unknown cause. the clients were very distraught and don’t know what to do. pet was stabilized by vet and people calmed down a bit. the doctor spoke to them. the doctor said the patient was stable, medicated, on iv fluid, had normal blood work and looked like everything was under control for now. however, the cause of the seizure is unknown. the vet explained it could be toxins, the start of epilepsy, a cancerous process, infectious disease, etc. he explained that the pet would be closely monitored for more seizures, and that would help us to decide where to go with his case. client, who had calmed some, asked ” well, he doesn’t go to vet very often, do you think since he good now, you by dr. natalie leave a comment i was looking at a case, post-op or after surgery, and a lady in her mid twenties with a smile on her face had lots to tell me about how her kitty had fared since the surgery. the cat had a single stone removed from his bladder that was causing him a considerable amount of pain and discomfort. the owner said,” i have a funny story.” i smiled and, of course, said, “please, do tell.” this owner is a bit of a prankster, but evidently she was describing to her boyfriend about everything that had happened to the cat, max, during his day at the vet, and then the surgery. then, she added,”-and then they send off the stone.” (now us in the vet world would understand this to mean that the bladder stone is getting sent to the lab to be evaluated for proper diet recommendations) the boyfriend asked,”well, where do they send it to?” in that split second, she decided to have a little fun with him. “well, we are sending the stone to a jeweler to have it made into a necklace to be worn on my neck.” boyfriend, “what!?!?!” “yes,” this prankster owner smiled and added in a sweet tone, “it came from max, he made it with his little body, so it is a precious
